Prep your bathroom

Before you get your cleaning gloves on, make sure your shower is clear of any hygiene products and other clutter. It’s a lot easier to give a surface a good clean when you’re not trying to wash around other mess. It’s also a good idea open a window if your bathroom has one, as it’s always better for the space you’re cleaning in to be well-ventilated.

How to clean a shower tray

Most household bathroom cleaners will work perfectly well, but sometimes you need something stronger. If you don’t want to spend lots of money on specialist cleaning products, you can try some of the homemade mixtures suggested below to clean your shower tray.

  • Lemon juice and white vinegar - A popular homemade concoction for stubborn limescale is a mixture of lemon juice and white vinegar. Coat the affected area, then leave to soak before scrubbing the limescale away.

  • Lemon juice, baking soda and essential oil – This combination of ingredients is great for general cleaning. The addition of essential oil adds a sweet-smelling scent to deal with any stubborn odours.

Cleaning a shower tray with bicarbonate of soda

Bicarbonate of soda is a brilliant ingredient to use for cleaning. To use bicarbonate of soda on your shower tray, you’ll need to make it into a paste. Here’s how:

  1. Add a few tablespoons of bicarbonate of soda into a bowl and mix slowly with room temperature water until a paste develops. How much bicarb you use will depend on how much paste you need. If you’re unsure, start with three heaped tablespoons and add more if required.
  2. Then, apply the paste to the stained areas of your shower tray using a cloth or sponge. Leave it to soak for 30 minutes to an hour, depending on the severity of the stains.
  3. When you’re happy that the product has fully soaked in, use a scrubbing tool, such as a scratchy sponge, to scrub away the dirt build-up and staining. Simply wash the remaining product away with warm water.

Please note: not all shower trays will react well to stronger cleaning solutions such as bicarbonate of soda. Always check the manufacturer guidelines.

How to whiten a yellowed shower tray

You might be tempted to use bleach on your shower tray for particularly stubborn stains, but this could potentially damage the material. Fortunately, there are lots of alternative remedies out there for yellow-stained shower trays. We recommend using lemon juice. You could also try mixing the lemon juice with salt. Rub it into the yellow stains, leave to soak, then scrub away. Rinse your shower tray with warm water afterwards.

Will bleach damage a shower tray?

Different materials will react differently to strong cleaning solutions like bleach. Bleach can easily damage the surface of your shower tray or leave it discoloured. Don’t risk it; instead, for stubborn dirt and stains on your shower tray, try one of the methods above.
